Family veterinary care · Portland, Maine

Calm rooms, clear answers, and a vet who remembers your dog's name.

Brightwater Veterinary looks after dogs, cats and the occasional rabbit on the east side of Portland. Appointments run thirty minutes so nobody is rushed, every estimate arrives before treatment starts, and the person who examines your pet is the person who phones you with the results.

Same-week appointments are held back every day for sick pets.

What we look after

Everyday medicine, done without the hurry

Most of what a pet needs in a lifetime happens in this building. When a case needs a specialist, we make the referral call ourselves and send the notes ahead.

Wellness exams and vaccines

A nose-to-tail check once or twice a year catches the small things early: a heart murmur, a sore tooth, a lump that has changed shape. Vaccines follow a schedule we write to suit how your pet actually lives, not a fixed calendar.

In-house diagnostics

Ultrasound, digital x-rays and a blood analyser sit two doors from the exam room. Most answers are ready before your coat is back on.

Dentistry and surgery

Dental cleanings, lump removals and spays happen under monitored anaesthesia, with a nurse at your pet's side from sedation until they are awake and drinking.

Sick-pet visits

Vomiting, limping or a cough that will not quit: call before ten and we will see your pet that day.

Senior and long-term care

Arthritis, kidney and thyroid conditions are managed with a plan you can follow, a diary of how your pet is doing and honest talk about quality of life.

Your appointment

What happens when you walk in

  1. 01

    A quiet start

Dogs and cats wait in separate rooms. If your pet is anxious, tell us at booking and we will use the side door and an empty exam room.

  2. 02

    A full history

A nurse asks about food, habits, travel and anything that worried you. Bring photos of the food label and any medicines.

  3. 03

    The exam, narrated

Your vet explains what they feel and see as they go, so the findings never arrive as a surprise at the end.

  4. 04

    A written estimate

You receive a line-by-line cost on paper before any test or treatment begins, with what is urgent marked apart from what can wait.

From the waiting room

“Juno hates cars and hates vets, and she walked into Brightwater wagging. The nurse got down on the floor with her and we did the whole exam there.”
Katrin DallowayJuno's owner, Munjoy Hill
“They phoned me at eight that evening with my cat's blood results and told me what the numbers meant in plain words. I have never had that from a clinic before.”
Marcus OyelaranBiscuit's owner, Deering
“Our old lab has arthritis and a bad heart. The team built a plan around walks he can still enjoy, and they never once made us feel foolish for asking.”
Ruth EllingsenWalter's owner, Falmouth

Things people ask before they come in

Do you see exotic pets?

We treat rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. For reptiles, birds and anything with unusual needs we refer to a specialist in Scarborough and send your pet's file ahead.

What if I cannot afford a treatment today?

Tell us at the estimate. We can often stage a plan over several weeks, and we will say clearly which parts are urgent. Payment plans are available through a third-party lender.

Can I stay with my pet during the exam?

Yes, for almost everything. For x-rays and some procedures we ask owners to step out for safety, and a nurse updates you as soon as it is done.

Who answers emergencies after hours?

A partner emergency hospital twenty minutes away takes our patients overnight. We give you the number at your appointment day and it sits on the back of every appointment card.

New to Portland, or new to us?

Bring your pet's old records, or just their name. We will request the rest from your previous vet, so the appointment starts with a full picture.
