Prepare

Ten minutes now saves hours on the worst day.

Calder County Fire & Rescue asks every household to build a go-bag, agree on a meeting place and know their zone. The checklist below takes ten minutes and is the same one our own crews use at home.

Emergency kit with first aid, water, torch and radio laid out

What goes in the go-bag

Water and food

Three days of drinking water, about four litres per person per day, and food that needs no cooking.

Papers and phone list

Copies of identification, insurance and prescriptions in a waterproof pouch, plus a printed list of numbers.

Light and power

A torch, spare batteries and a battery bank that can charge a phone at least three times.

First aid and medicine

A kit with dressings and gloves, plus seven days of any regular medication in labelled containers.

Burn season at a glance

  1. October to April

    Permitted burning · Permit required

Piles under 4 feet wide may be burned on calm mornings after you call the burn line.

  2. May and June

Restricted burning · Only before 10:00

Burning is allowed in barrels with a screen, with water at hand and an adult present.

  3. July to September

No outdoor burning · Countywide ban

Fireworks, open fires and campfires outside designated rings are prohibited.

Preparing with children and pets

How should I talk to children about evacuation?

Practice leaving the house calmly, show them the meeting place and let them carry a small bag of their own comforts.

What about large animals?

Keep trailers hitched and halters ready, and register animal locations with the county map so crews know to look.
