Private tutoring — Chicago, Lincoln Square

The tutor who has read your child's actual textbook.

Northgate Learning Desk is Maren Holt, a former high-school maths teacher, and four other tutors she has trained. We work from your school's textbooks and syllabus, so Tuesday's session is about Wednesday's quiz, not a generic worksheet. Sessions run at our desk on Lincoln Avenue or at your kitchen table.

Where we help most

Teenager writing math formulas on a blackboard

Maths from fractions to calculus

Maren writes a short diagnostic from the child's last test, finds the single gap that caused the next three, and rebuilds from there. Algebra I and II, geometry and AP Calculus AB.

Teacher and student exploring chemistry with lab equipment

Science with the lab report done properly

Chemistry and biology tutors who will check the units on your data table, help you draft a hypothesis and explain why the graph looks the way it does.

Student writing answers on an exam sheet at a desk

ACT, SAT and selective-enrollment exams

Timed practice sections every other week, with a written error log that shows which question types are costing you points.

Tutor instructing a student at home

At your table, on your schedule

Tutors travel within ten minutes of Lincoln Square, Ravenswood and Andersonville. Younger children often concentrate better at home.

How we start

  1. 01

A phone call, not a form

Maren calls within a day to ask about the teacher, the textbook, the next test and what happens when homework time begins.

  2. 02

    The trial hour

A tutor works through a sample from the school's own materials and writes you a one-page plan with three clear goals.

  3. 03

    A weekly note

After each session you receive a short email: what we covered, what stuck and what to practise before next time.

Notes from families

“Our son went from avoiding maths homework to explaining logarithms at dinner. The weekly email meant I always knew what to ask him.”
Rebecca L.Parent of a tenth-grader
“Maren spotted that my daughter's trouble with chemistry was actually algebra. Three sessions later the lab reports stopped being a fight.”
Tomás A.Parent of a junior

Common questions

How many sessions will we need?

Most families start with one session a week for six weeks, then reassess. Exam preparation is usually twice a week for the last month.

Can you tutor online?

Yes. Online sessions use a shared whiteboard and cost the same as in-person hours.

Are your tutors background-checked?

Every tutor holds a teaching licence and has passed an Illinois background check, repeated each year.
